Virtual instructor-led training is the process of delivering e-learning courses that are led by a virtual instructor. They are also referred to as virtual classrooms or virtual learning environments. The virtual instructor is an AI-powered bot that monitors learner performance and provides real-time feedback. Virtual instructor-led training removes the barriers between students and instructors, allowing organizations to scale e-learning programs at a low cost with high adoption rates and minimal logistical support from onsite staff. This article will explore what VILT is, its benefits, how it works, different types, the technology behind it, and examples of organizations using it for their employee training programs.

What is Virtual Instructor-Led Training?

Virtual Instructor-Led Training is the practice of delivering online courses through e-learning that are led by a virtual instructor. The bot, which has been developed with complex algorithms, closely monitors the learner’s progress and presents timely feedback and instructions. Although virtual instructor-led training is a relatively new concept, it is something that organizations have been pursuing since the mid-2000s. Virtual instructor-led training is a highly scalable solution that uses AI-powered virtual instructors to facilitate courses that are delivered online, on-site or both. The approach enables organizations to increase their reach (e.g., geographically distribute their instructors) and scale their course offerings quickly.

3 Benefits of Virtual Instructor-Led Training

There are many benefits to organizations that are opting for virtual instructor-led training. These include cost savings, scalability, and flexibility. Training costs can be reduced through economies of scale, as well as the use of a centralized service. Moreover, scalability is another key benefit because organizations can easily expand the number of learners with little lead time. Additionally, virtual instructor-led training provides flexibility. Learners can access the content at their own pace, which eases the burden of having to schedule time with instructors.

How Does Virtual Instructor-Led Training work?

Virtual instructor-led training is a blended learning approach that uses AI-powered virtual instructors for live and asynchronous interactive sessions. The virtual instructor plays the role of a facilitator, providing real-time guidance and responding to learner questions and comments. These virtual instructors are monitored continuously by supervisors to ensure high-quality interactions. Virtual instructor-led training is an asynchronous approach that lets learners study on their own schedule and receive timely, contextual feedback from the instructor. This asynchronous model is helpful for learners who work full-time, have an erratic schedule, or are in different time zones.

Types of Virtual Instructor-Led Training

There are three main types of virtual instructor-led training: Live Instructor-Led Training (LILT), Blended Instructor-Led Training (BILT), and Asynchronous Instructor-Led Training (AILT). Live Instructor-Led Training (LILT) is the traditional online training model that leverages one-to-many communication through a central instructor. Blended Instructor-Led Training (BILT), on the other hand, is the combination of online and face-to-face learning. In this model, a centralized instructor uses a combination of live and asynchronous sessions to manage a large number of learners. On the other hand, asynchronous Instructor-Led Training (AILT) is a completely online training model that relies on asynchronous communication between learners and instructors. A centralized instructor manages a small number of learners and guides them through the content.

Technology Behind VILT

Simulations – Virtual instructors can guide learners through simulations of real-world scenarios to let them practice their skills in a safe environment.

Artificial Intelligence – AI-powered virtual instructors can track learners’ progress and provide tailored feedback.

Chatbots – Chatbots can be used to manage interactions, such as scheduling, grading, and feedback.

Video – Video can be used to make content more visual and engaging, as well as to let learners access content on the go.

Voice – Voice can be used to create audiobooks and podcasts to help learners study while commuting.

Cloud-Based – The technology behind virtual instructor-led training is cloud-based, so learners can access the content from any device with an internet connection.

Final Words: The Future of E-learning

There are many technological advancements that are taking e-learning to new levels of engagement, efficiency, and scalability. Some of these include the use of virtual instructor-led training, the growth of digital learning platforms, the expansion of artificial intelligence, and the rise of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Going forward, organizations should expect more sophisticated e-learning tools and solutions as technology continues to evolve.

It was not too long ago when the L&D department’s sole focus was compliance training. While it is an essential and required box to check over the last ten years, the L&D discipline has become so much more. It’s now a leadership and management development engine, a master of Instructor-Led Training (ILT), and an expert in scaling learning across the corporation by offering virtual classroom software learning programs.

More importantly, it has become a growth engine for career paths and meaningful business impact, with the US e-learning market possibly growing by $12.81 billion between 2020 and 2024 (source: Market Research). According to an eLearning Industry survey, 47% of organizations have negatively impacted their training budgets due to the pandemic. But more than 23% of organizations are trying to completely migrate from face-to-face classroom training to virtual classroom software and on-demand formats. The fast-changing and volatile challenges of work may seem insurmountable. But the learning activities of thousands of international businesses offer a glimpse of the bright future ahead for on-demand learning.

Nurturing a culture of learning to upskill your employees makes good business sense. It’s simply too expensive for companies to hire their way out of the skills gap.

On-demand learning – What do we see as we move through 2021?

Soft skills training is seeing a rise in demand, including blended learning that includes Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT) to replicate the fundamental nature of in-person instruction.

eLearning for self-paced learning – Expanding on what was covered in VILT sessions. Students can use instructional strategies such as scenarios, simulations, and case studies to increase engagement while giving a taste of real-life problems.

Mobile learning  – Ideal if you’re on the go, for anytime-anywhere access to learning assets, including performance support.

Microlearning – such as videos, problem-based exercises, audio podcasts to reinforce and refresh learning to beat the ‘I’ve forgotten it’ curve.

Personalized learning paths – Using LMS (Learning Management Systems). A Learning Experience Platform (LXP) is even better for adaptive learning.

Social learning –  Elements that include discussion forums, activities on social sites, ask an SME—can inspire learners to seek and share information and best practices that they can use in their jobs.

Another lesson from 2020 that affects eLearning in 2021 is that many people who begrudgingly started working remotely have found that they want to continue.

Surveys of employees have found that fully 90% of employees want to continue working from home [1] in at least some capacity. Almost 50% of workers in these surveys indicated that they wish to continue to work remotely for most or all of their time.

The shifting workplace means that the future of corporate learning must inevitably become more flexible so employees can take training when they need it.

Virtual Classroom Software

On-demand learning allows students to work through a class in their own time, start and stop labs, access training videos and other course materials while keeping engaged with quizzes and polls — all powered by ReadyTech. My background is in consulting and education services for software companies. I’ve also worked as a consultant developing systems for enterprise content management.

How did you become an instructor at your company?

About 6 years ago, I joined education services at MarkLogic. At that time, I was the only one on the team doing training. Today, we have 8 instructors worldwide.

When I began at MarkLogic, my very first project was to implement online instructor-led training. Because I had used ReadyTech’s Instructor-Led Training solution in the past, bringing ReadyTech to MarkLogic was an easy choice. It has been so important for helping us scale our training program.

How has training delivery changed since you’ve been an instructor?

Before we used ReadyTech, instructors would hand out printed materials in a face-to-face class and were dependent on local installs and all the dependency issues that come with that approach. We also did not have the tools necessary to provide labs in the virtual environment. Once we brought ReadyTech on board, I reworked the curriculum to allow for virtual courses.

Learn more about ReadyTech’s virtual training labs.

How long have you been using ReadyTech’s solutions?

For over 6 years now. We currently use ReadyTech for VILT and we host our own self-paced courses.

Which tools/features do you use the most? The LabManager tool. This tool allows instructors to be hands-on with students and mirrors a face-to-face environment. Within LabManager, I use the Inactivity Monitor so I can see which students are still working on lab exercises and which students are finished.

I also use the Thumbnail View to see all of the students’ desktops simultaneously so I know who is doing what and where they are in the lab exercise. This view provides a high-level picture of where students are in the exercises. I can see when students get stuck and give them the necessary help and personal attention. Some students don’t want the entire class to know they are struggling, so it is important for me to see exactly what each individual student is doing. ReadyTech’s solutions foster an environment where students are not afraid to ask questions and get help.

“That’s why we use ReadyTech—for the training and instructor tools that add so much value to our training.”

What’s your favorite tool/feature?

The Admin Portal allows me to empower and trust my team. I let instructors own and manage all of the events they teach. Without the Admin Portal, it would be difficult to do this. The portal allows for the best customer experience because instructors can log in and make any last minute changes themselves. It provides complete control, regardless of geographic location or time zone.

I also appreciate ReadyTech’s worldwide capabilities because we have instructors all over the world. And ReadyTech’s 24/7 Support is wonderful. It is rare that we have to call support to help connect a student, but when we do, it is extremely helpful. We as instructors value this service because the beginning of every class is a very chaotic time in the life of an instructor. It is difficult to take 10 minutes to help one single student, so we defer to ReadyTech 24/7 Support to help.

Learn more about ReadyTech’s 24/7 Support Services.

What advice/tips would you give to a new instructor just starting with ReadyTech’s solutions?

Always put yourself in your students’ shoes and think like students. Remember that some students may not be familiar with online tools, so be sure to demonstrate how to get connected and work within the tools.

In all of our classes, we set the expectation early that students must pay full attention at all times. We encourage students to have dual monitors in order to see and follow along with the instructor. This makes online learning easier for students.

But we also realize that many students have limited attention spans. As a result, ensure that students are actively working in the VM and don’t just put up PowerPoint presentations for students to watch. Be sure to give hands-on work. For example, we frequently use a follow-the-leader format where we provide written instructions, demonstrate a skill, and then ask students to work independently on an exercise.

We try to tackle the issue of limited attention spans by developing curriculum that gives students the opportunity to catch up whenever they tune out and miss information.

I have been teaching for 40 years, beginning back in high school. When my math professor was sick, the school would bring in a sub. The sub would sit down—and I taught the math course. I have been teaching ever since.

How did you become an instructor?

I have taught numerous courses, including Pascal, Algebra, Trigonometry, TCP/IP, Ada, Introduction to the Air Force and Flying Airplanes. I was hired at Software AG as an instructor/course developer about 17 years ago, and I have been teaching the Software AG Suite ever since.

How has training delivery changed since you’ve been an instructor?

Training has evolved from classroom training without computers, to on-site delivery with an instructor setting up the software on each training box, to remote training, and finally, I am seeing the development of more self-paced training courses.

How long have you been using ReadyTech’s solutions?

About 10 years—using your Instructor-Led Training solution.

Which tools or features do you use the most?

LabManager is great because it allows me to help students and see exactly what they are doing. I typically use it when a student asks for help. I also use LabManager to evaluate if I need to allow more time for the students to complete a virtual training lab. And also the over the shoulder features, which allows instructors to take control of a student’s system.

Learn more about ReadyTech’s virtual training labs.

What advice would you give to a new instructor just starting with ReadyTech’s solutions?

Practice! Have someone “play” a student, and then try to use WebEx and ReadyTech. Practice how to use chat, screen sharing, and “help” the student with an exercise.

I joined RES as a Support Engineer—but actually had a background working for a training company. I kept telling everyone that my passion was actually in training, so after a few years, I was offered an opportunity to become a trainer—and I took it. That was 6 years ago.

How has training delivery changed since you’ve been an instructor?

Not as much as one would think. The old-fashioned in-person training is still going strong—even though people have been predicting its demise for the past 15 years.

However, what has changed is the lab environment. In the beginning, setting up a classroom meant providing one or more physical machines per student. For the trainer, there was a KVM switch to move the projected image from one computer to another.

Later came VMs that could run side by side on a single laptop, but these still required a lot of time to copy the VMs to each student’s machine. And then of course came the cloud offerings, such as ReadyTech. The preparations are next-to-none and the flexibility is way better than other solutions. But you do need a strong Internet connection to ensure everything runs smoothly.

How long have you been using ReadyTech’s solutions?

I’ve been using the ReadyTech virtual training software since 2013. Up until now, we have been using the ReadyTech’s Instructor-Led Training solution. Although, we are definitely open to offering self-paced training, but have not yet developed the course materials for this type of training.

“ReadyTech’s virtual training software is extremely reliable and easy to use. Their support is awesome. It allows trainers to focus on what they are paid for—to delivery training—without having to troubleshoot technical, connection or performance issues.”

Which virtual training tools do you use the most?

LabManager. We often use ReadyTech in online training delivery—and LabManager allows me to easily keep track of my students’ progress in the virtual training labs, as well as helps students solve their problems by taking control of their virtual training lab. I also use LabManager to monitor students during lab time and help them if they get stuck. I sometimes use the screen sharing feature to show one student’s virtual training lab to the rest of the class. They can see what type of problems they may run into—or I can show them alternative solutions from other students.

The Transfer Files feature allows me to distribute new versions of configuration files among my students, making the virtual training lab a lot more agile.

What’s your favorite tool/feature?

The fact that my students are able to contact support directly, and even before the training has started, is very helpful. This way, any connection problems can already be solved before I start my class.

Learn more about ReadyTech’s 24/7 Support Services.

What advice/tips would you give to a new instructor just starting with ReadyTech’s solutions?

Most functionality is pretty straightforward, so learning how to use the ReadyTech’s virtual training software takes only a few minutes. ReadyTech provides free demos and I recommend getting one of these. If you miss something, you can contact ReadyTech 24/7 Support. They respond very quickly and will be able to tell you where your desired feature can be found.

In my case, every time I missed a feature, support would tell me that it was “already in development” and often, I would have it a few weeks later. ReadyTech’s virtual training software is extremely reliable and easy to use. Their support is awesome. It allows trainers to focus on what they are paid for—to deliver training—without having to troubleshoot technical, connection or performance issues.

How did you become an instructor at your company?

There was a need for training, so I developed a training program where one did not exist before.

How has training delivery changed since you’ve been an instructor?

It began with transparencies on an overhead projector to HD video equipment. And now students are using a WebEx/ReadyTech combination, as well as virtual instructor-led training (VILT) with ReadyTech providing the virtual training lab environment.

How long have you been using ReadyTech’s solutions?

About 3 years. We use ReadyTech’s Instructor-Led Training and Self-Paced Training solutions. Because there is way too much material to be delivered, we count on students to do a lot of prerequisite work.

Which tools/features do you use the most?

Lab Management ThumbnailI use the Lab Timer feature to tell when students are finished with their labs. I also frequently use the screen sharing options within LabManager to share my system with some—or all—of the students.

What advice would you give to a new instructor just starting with ReadyTech’s solutions?

Watching the how-to video on the ReadyTech site is very informative to new instructors. I highly recommend it. To view the how-to videos, login to ReadyTech’s Instructor-Led Portal and click “Support” on the navigation menu.

When I was an undergrad in college, I worked as a teaching assistant. After graduating, I got a job in online support at Hewlett Packard. I then moved to HP’s training department to design courses. About a year and a half ago, I began training at Silver Peak.

How has training delivery changed since you have been an instructor?

There have been many big changes. When I began teaching, students would fly to HP’s corporate office to take classes. Then I began to fly all over the world to teach classes. Now, Silver Peak’s classes are all blended, instructor-led training with some students attending in person, and most attending remotely.

“To be honest, switching to ReadyTech didn’t really require a transition. There isn’t much of a learning curve. I double-clicked on the application and boom!I’m on a virtual machine.”

What do you like most about ReadyTech?

Silver Peak was using ReadyTech’s solutions before I arrived, so I started using it immediately after joining Silver Peak—and I am very happy about that fact.

In the past, I had to do everything to set up the class manually. I had to build the networks, build the devices, reset all of the virtual training labs and spend hours setting up for a class. But ReadyTech does all of this for me which removes countless hours, weeks and months that I would need to do these things manually. I now log into the ReadyTech Admin Portal to schedule and set up my own classes. I create an event, request a number of labs and just like that, I get access codes to send to students. This self-registration saves me so much time and it allows me to make real-time class updates.

ReadyTech’s Admin Portal

At Silver Peak, we provide a software-defined WAN device. We teach two classes for this product line—a 2-day beginner’s class and a 2-day advanced class. The ReadyTech environment is absolutely perfect for this because it can support complex network and application setups. For example, with ReadyTech we’re able to implement Silver Peak’s Unity Orchestrator, which is our configuration system, all the network appliances and all the devices used on-site by Silver Peak’s clients. We can emulate everything we do inside the ReadyTech environment.

Coming from your old company’s training tools and switching to ReadyTechwhat was that transition like?

To be honest, switching to ReadyTech didn’t really require a transition. There isn’t much of a learning curve. I double-clicked on the application and boom—I’m on a virtual training lab. I was excited to have everything laid-out in front of me.

Learn more about ReadyTech’s virtual training labs.

What features do you like best?

ReadyTech’s LabManager is a lifesaver and I use it extensively. In the old world, it was tedious to share another student’s screen with the rest of the classroom. To share a student’s screen, you would have to disrupt what everyone else is seeing on their screens.

But LabManager allows me to easily see a student’s screen using my own desktop. I can walk students through a problem and other students are not disturbed in the process. When I teach I usually have multiple monitors and it’s really convenient to just go in and talk to students over audio, look at their machine and talk them through a problem. And while this is happening, the other students can still see the slides they were looking at or still be working on their own labs and not be hassled.

Have you had to use ReadyTech’s 24/7 Technical Support?

Tech support is also quite valuable. I have never had this level of access to tech support before with any other company. ReadyTech’s support team is extremely responsive and has always solved my problems when the problem was solvable. So I’ve been very impressed with the technical support at ReadyTech.

Learn more about ReadyTech’s 24/7 Support Services.

What advice would you give to new instructors using ReadyTech’s solutions?

Simply put, ReadyTech is easy to use and intuitive. It reminds me of when I got my first iPhone. Within five minutes from opening the box, I had the phone working and most importantly, had a ringtone on the phone assigned for my wife. I didn’t need to read the manual. For new instructors, ReadyTech will be similar to this iPhone experience: it’s easy to use and no manual needed. And for anything else you need, just contact ReadyTech and they will demo it for you.

How did you become an instructor at Progress?

Progress_LogoI have been teaching for more than 25 years. My teaching career began in the Air Force when I taught UNIX classes as part of my military duties. For the last 21 years, I have been teaching technical classes to Progress customers, predominantly direct users of Progress’s application development tools and end users of 3rd party applications.

How has training delivery changed since you have been an instructor?

In the early days, the best you could do was teach classes using basic lectures and labs. Students had books with examples and lab exercises. While instructors would use PowerPoint to help illustrate a concept, we didn’t actually “teach” from PowerPoints. I remember using a flat panel screen that sat on top of a projector.

We didn’t do remote training until about the mid-2000s when the drive to lower traveling expenses and stay at home started to come out. Once remote training began to grow in about 2005-2006, we developed our own type of remote training at the company I worked for which we called “e-training.” We cobbled together different platforms, including Adobe Connect, remote desktops, smart whiteboards with Bluetooth digital pens. It was our very own version of remote instructor-led training.

We also had a producer who handled all the technical issues from students so the instructor could focus on instruction. And I remember we had a live, high-definition camera looking into our classroom so students could see the instructor. Today, what’s changed is there’s a much greater demand for different forms of training, for example in-person instructor-led, self-paced online training and virtual instructor-led training (VILT). Students still prefer in-person instructor-led training, but travel costs encourages their employers to pick VILT instead.

BThompsonProfilePic“First of all, the use of access codes is very organized and efficient. Once we schedule a class, students are assigned an access code. Using this access code, students get access to the virtual classroom where we can communicate with them, give them access to all course materials, give lectures/presentations and work on virtual training labs.”

First of all, the use of access codes is very organized and efficient. Once we schedule a class, students are assigned an access code. Using this access code, students get access to the virtual classroom where we can communicate with them, give them access to all course materials, give lectures/presentations and work on virtual training labs.

Which ReadyTech features do you like the most?

We have been speaking to ReadyTech since the beginning of 2017 and offered our first VILT class in April 2017. So far, we have discovered many great features and were very impressed with the service ReadyTech has provided.

First of all, the use of access codes is very organized and efficient. Once we schedule a class, students are assigned an access code. Using this access code, students get access to the virtual classroom where we can communicate with them, give them access to all course materials, give lectures/presentations and work on virtual training labs.

Lab-ManagementSecond, the lab overview feature is also extremely useful. The fact that instructors can see a student’s screen and provide assistance when they notice a student lagging is very helpful. This feature allows instructors to interact one-on-one with students and gets them as close to students as possible. We’ve used Amazon Cloud Services before, but they allowed only one user to access the lab at a time—in other words, the student and instructor couldn’t look at the lab together.

Third, the other thing I really like about ReadyTech is how we can give students access to the hands-on lab over a multi-day class—this means we can assign lab homework for students to work on after the VILT class.

And finally, ReadyTech’s audio capability. At first, we didn’t realize that ReadyTech offered this feature, but now it has become integral to our teaching. Instead of having to use GoToMeeting for audio, ReadyTech provides this audio feature built-in—which prevents us from having to switch back-and-forth between ReadyTech and a 3rd party audio provider during the class. That’s huge.

What advice would you give to new instructors using ReadyTech’s solutions?

Be sure to set up a practice session. Schedule a training event and invite the potential instructors that will be teaching on ReadyTech or some of your internal people that can act as students. Take advantage of ReadyTech’s free trial class to become familiar with their virtual training tools and features. You need to be familiar with that because you need to tell students how to use the tools, too. This practice will help you be a better teacher and give your students a better learning experience.

So what I would say is give all of your instructors at least 2 days before class to interact with the tools and features. Becoming familiar with the lay of the land is critical for instructors just starting out on ReadyTech’s online training software.

How did you become an instructor at your company?

I actually stumbled into being an instructor. I was a business and technical consultant for more than 6 years—and was growing tired of it. An opportunity opened up in the training department, and I was recruited for my product knowledge. I have been teaching ever since.

How has Information First’s training department changed since you started there?

As much as some people want to embrace the “new style” of learning, which is on-demand and online, our product suite doesn’t warrant that. The tried-and-true best method to train our particular software is in-person, instructor led training. While virtual training definitely works, it is not our preferred delivery method. So in a sense, our department hasn’t changed that much.
“ReadyTech is just so easy to use. Things work without any effort.”

How long have you been using ReadyTech’s solutions?

We have been using ReadyTech for about 10 years. I have seen many changes at ReadyTech—and they only get better and better.

Do you use ReadyTech’s instructor-led solution, self-paced solution or both?

We use ReadyTech’s instructor-led training solution including their hosted labs. Our students work in their own environments, hosted at ReadyTech. Instructors teach the theory, and students apply the practical.

Which tools/features do you use the most?

When teaching in the virtual environment, I like the ability to display and take over a student’s screen. This is great way to assist students. The fact that I can see a student’s screen at any time keeps students consistently participating. No one wants to be embarrassed, so they keep up with the labs.

What’s your favorite feature?

ReadyTech’s support team. From helping clients get connected to building images overnight, the support team is top notch. They are fast, timely and accurate. And the staff is very pleasant and available 24/7. The support team is what keeps me loyal to ReadyTech!

I remember a few years ago, I was working in Amsterdam and needed a new environment setup up. Thanks to the great support staff, I had a new server 2013 environment with Office and SQL installed by the next morning. The support team worked overnight—while I slept—and it was ready in the morning. Great support made that happen!

What advice would you give to a new instructor, just starting with ReadyTech’s solutions?

I am not sure what advice I could offer to a new instructor because ReadyTech is just so easy to use. Things work without any effort.
